Fall is a wonderful time for family traditions! From the beautiful foliage to crisp mornings, to apple picking and pumpkin carving, there are many opportunities to celebrate the fall season as a family! We have a few fall family traditions that we look forward to every year and I’m excited to share them (and a few other ideas) with you today!
1. Enjoy the Fall Foliage
Fall foliage is a beautiful wonder of God’s creation! It is easy to forget to look around us as we are driving to and from places throughout the fall season. Taking the time to enjoy the colors of fall is one of our favorite fall family traditions!
A couple of things we like to do to enjoy the fall foliage is go on hikes and/or spend an afternoon photographing the beautiful fall foliage.
2. Go Apple Picking
This is one of our absolute favorite things to do in the fall as a family. We love to visit the local apple orchard and pick dozens of apples! While my husband and children nibble away throughout the afternoon/evening, I pick apples and think of all the ways I will use them! (more on that bit later 🙂 )
3. Apple Baking
I spend our apple picking adventure dreaming of all the delicious recipes I will make! Later the kids and I will spend an entire day prepping many of the apples for the freezer. We also make some delicious baked goods to freeze and save for later too. My favorite fall baking secret is freezer apple pie filling! These Apple Crisp Cookies are an invention of mine that my family loves!
Typically while we are apple picking the kids pick out their pumpkins while we’re at the apple orchard. Later that evening or the following weekend they draw their pumpkin designs and then we carve them together in the kitchen.
We love fall baking and I make sure we get a few sugar pumpkins each fall for all of our favorite pumpkin recipes. One of our favorites is Pumpkin Spice Scones! By the way, did you know you can bake an entire sugar pumpkin and the meat comes out easily with only a spoon?
I’m a country girl and tractors remind me of back home, so anytime we can find an old-fashioned hayride we jump on board! One year when I was growing up in Connecticut my parents used pine needles to fill our trailer because we couldn’t afford to buy hay for a hayride. I must admit the smell of pine needles on our “hayride” is still with me today.
7. Corn Maze
Corn mazes are a lot of fun! After the farmer’s have finished harvesting the corn for the year, they cut down part of their corn stalks to create a fun maze for you to walk through and find your way out! If you can find a moonlight corn maze near you that is a must for this year! It’s my kids’ favorite fall family tradition!
