Berry Picking Family Fun

Share with your friends!

I am so excited to guest post at my friend Stephanie’s blog today! It’s always so wonderful to meet other readers online who enjoy some of the perks that blogging offers to families all around the world. It’s a wonderful way to connect, share ideas, and encourage one another. Today I’ll be sharing some Fall Family Fun with some tips for Berry Picking!

I’ve been blogging at HappyandBlessedHome.com for a little over two years now and I’ve been pre-schooling my two adorable boys at home. Since I started blogging I’ve created over 1,200 pages of free alphabet printables, fun circle time morning board printables, as well as published some printable children’s books. I’m an artist and have loved books every since I was a little girl. My grandpa owned a bookstore and would bring me books even as a toddler. He’d be so proud to see me today – publishing books online. What an amazing world we live in with all the wonders of the internet!

Berry Picking Family Fun

Now I’m a mom and I have this amazing opportunity to build the kind of memories my grandpa gave me into the lives of my own children. I live in a part of town that is new to me so when a neighbor mom invited me to take the boys berry-picking I was so excited to go. If you’ve never been berry-picking, I have a few tips of advice:

  • Apply sunscreen liberally on yourself and your kids before you head outdoors.
  • Have your kids wear clothes that you don’t mind getting stained.
  • Bring plenty of wipes.
  • Bring bottled water for yourself and your kids.
  • If you’re bringing a camera, diapers, packed lunch, or other sundries, place everything in a backpack to keep your hands free.
  • You’ll need to bring some cash to pay for the berries you pick.
  • Learn about the berries – what color do they need to be in order for them to be ripe enough to eat?

Photo below: This is a blackberry bush. The berries are red at first and they darken as the fruit ripens. Be careful to pick only the darker fruits – otherwise the taste is tart instead of sweet.

We went to pick berries with four other adults – this was very helpful when it came to keeping an eye on two toddlers wandering around the bushes. I loved being able to allow the boys to explore and pick berries on their own. I think they ate as many berries as they picked. Word to the wise – do not place your children in yellow collared shirts for berry picking. I certainly learned from this experience, next time it will be dark t-shirts for our family!

We gathered our berries in small baskets and paid for them at the berry farm exit.

Now on to the fun part – taking the berries home and eating them. I wish I could say I made these delicious blackberry pancakes from scratch, but they’re made using a boxed buttermilk pancake mix {blush}. It was so easy and delicious – and it made for a truly memorable experience for my husband and kids – we got to eat the berries that the boys helped me pick. Berry picking family fun is one of our favorite Fall memories!
