Fall is finally here, and that means there are all kinds of changes going on in nature. Leaves are changing colors and falling off the trees. Grasses are drying out. Flowers are changing as summer flowers die and fall mums are being planted. This is a great time to get outdoors with your child to explore the nature around you. To make your afternoon walk even more fun, see if your kids can find funny faces in the nature around them.

Take a walk around your neighborhood or find a new place to explore with your little ones. If necessary, you could just explore your own backyard. Have them take along a paper bag so that they can collect bits of nature as you walk. Have them look for acorns and twigs, leaves and petals. Can they find any odd shaped rocks?

Now that your sweetie has all the nature they need, have them spread out their findings. Talk about what they’ve found. Do they know the names of any of the trees {leaves} or flowers they’ve collected? What kind of tree did their acorns come from? Describe the rocks they found. Are they smooth or rough? Are they flat or round? What color are the flower petals? How do they feel? How do they smell?

Now, it’s time to get creative. How many funny faces can they create with their nature collection? How many different items can they use in one face? Can they make a face that has different colors in it? Can they add accessories – hair flowers, hats, etc. – to their funny faces? Have fun!

When your child is done creating their funny faces, let them draw them. Print out the page below, and have them draw their favorite funny face creation.
