You have heard it before: people who homeschool are weird and want to shelter their children.
Guess what, that is TRUE!!! We are different, set apart, from the rest. I guess that would make us weird. And, for us, yes, we want to shelter our children. But not from what you may think.
in 2010 when hubby and I decided to keep our children home we had a list of reasons. The first and foremost reason was that we felt it is what God had pressed upon our hearts. I never visioned the day that I would pull up to a brick building, open the door and send my child in. Instead I always envisioned sitting down reading, drawing, writing, with my children. I didn’t know at the time that was going to be us homeschooling.
We also kept them home because it just makes sense. I do not work outside of the home. I am here and able to care for my children. Why would I send them somewhere else to learn when I can teach them at home. I also want my children to know and love The Lord before anything else. Let’s face it, folks, that just isn’t happening in the public school room.
Keeping our kids home also allows our children to participate in activities and events that they would not get to be a part of if they were in public schools. The horse rescue we attend each week wouldn’t be able to squeeze us in during the after school hours. With our schedule so flexible we are able to attend during the middle of the day, in the middle of the week. It is perfect for us!
Having my kids home means that I get to be the one to watch them grown, learn, and excel! Have you ever witnessed your child grasp a new concept? It is the greatest feeling ever. I am so blessed to be able to witness that each day with my children. I will never forget the first day that S brought in Green Eggs and Ham, sat on my lap and read it to me. BEST.FEELING.EVER!
I have direct say-so on when my children learn about s*x, drugs, alcohol, and the myriad of other things that public schools have decided is their job to teach. I knew far too much at such a young age. I do not want that for my children. I am not saying they are not exposed to real life. They do watch tv and play video games, but they do not have classes, school bus chats, and peers who have far more knowledge to share on those subjects.
Homeschooling means that we do not have to follow the set calendar of the public school system. We have 365 days to work! If we want to take off mid week and work on the weekends we can! We are able to take vacations later in the year, when other children are at school, and enjoy less crowds. (Sounds pretty great, huh?!)
I am not in any way shape or form saying that public school is bad. In fact I attended and graduated from public school. It just isn’t the place for my children. Not right now anyway, and I don’t see that changing. I have the utmost respect for public school teachers. I only have 2 to teach and cannot imagine a classroom full.
