What The Little Drummer Boy Taught Me

We have all heard and most of us probably know The Little Drummer Boy song by heart.  The Little Drummer Boy is a fictional character that we have all envision in the manger scene.

What The Little Drummer Boy Taught Me

The Little Drummer Boy is a song about a boy who was told to go see The King.  To bring their finest gifts to Him, to show him honor and their love.  The boy was poor and didn’t have anything worthy of the Lord.  He only knew that it was expected of him to go and bring a gift – something worthy of the Lord.

When he arrived he was without a gift.  He had nothing tangible to give the newborn baby.  He knew that he could give Him praise and a song.  God had blessed the boy with the gift of music and song.  He brought his drum along the journey and knew his song was to be his gift.  He asked Mary if it would be okay to play a song for the baby because that was all he had.  He began to play and the barn grew silent.  The animals stopped, the crowd hushed, and the baby smiled.

Can you imagine being that little drummer boy?  Knowing that you were expected to show up before the Lord with your finest offerings.  Knowing that nothing you owned was worthy of giving Him.  All you had was a drum and a song.

I am guessing that his hands were shaky, his heart was racing, and that he probably coward away from playing the song for a moment.  Instead he knew that God gave him a gift of song and music and that it was not to be wasted.  That his gift was to be used to honor the Lord and bless the crowd that was gathered.

He didn’t say “no, God, I can’t do this, I am not worthy.”  He didn’t stay home for fear of bringing nothing wrapped in a shiny box with a bow.  He showed up, he played and he sang his heart out.

Oh to be that boy!!  To know that the gifts God has blessed me with are worthy.  That what I have is enough.  I don’t need fancy boxes or string.  I don’t need frankensence, gold, or mehr.  I only need to be obedient and to head God’s will in my life.

I bet that the crowd that gathered around laughed and scoffed at “the gift” that little boy brought.  I bet that they made fun of him — until he played.

You see, we all have gifts.  We are all blessed with a special talent that only we can preform.  And that gift is good enough.  It is all that the Lord wants from us.

This Christmas I challenge you to find your gift.  To hone it.  To use it for the Lord.  Don’t mind the crowd, they will soon hush.
