Comfort is needed for those that are broken. Whether it be a broken heart, spirit or body. As mothers our children will come to us in their broken moments, the question is how do we respond?
Mother’s have the opportunity to be comforting in all different ways. It can be spoken in a word, given as a gift in a hard time, passed on by an act of affection or just a listening ear.
Yet, often our days get very busy with the various to do lists we create. Stopping to comfort our children can be a moment we choose to pass up, but we must strive not to miss this opportunity. We must embrace the chance to hold our children close, for one day this time will pass. Comforting our children provides them with snuggles, love and pure warmth from their mother’s heart.
Take a moment and think over the last few days. Were there times you were too busy to listen to a broken heart? The times that they were full of drama and not really hurt did you ignore them? Was your conversation on the phone more important than one with them?
Each day the choices we make show our children not only who we are, but it molds who they will become.
Look around the world today and notice a few things with me.
How does the mother in the park speak to her child when it’s time to go? Does she use a comforting motherly tone? As the teenager tries to explain their feelings a midst all the new hormones raging that they don’t understand, how attentive is their mother to them?
Comfort is lacking in our culture. Mother’s aren’t exhibiting it, so they aren’t teaching their children to use it either. Our children learn from what we say and do. If we take the time to comfort our children, then they will learn to comfort others and eventually our grandchildren.
Daily we are given multiple opportunities to comfort our children, moments that we might not recognize as such. Take the following into consideration; a scabbed knee, a broken toy, a friendship breaking apart, or even a relationship in shambles. How we respond is key.
Being a comforting mother is truly a blessing. There are many children whom have never felt a mother’s comforting embrace, word, or listening ear. May we not take our little ones for granted. May we embrace the comfort God gives each of us and pass it onto our children.
Ending with the greatest reminder on comfort, during the spiritually difficult times in your life, how did God respond when you approached Him? In His faithfulness He provides us with comfort, peace, strength and love in the midst of all our struggles. As mothers we need to take lessons from the Lord on comfort, for He is THE Comforter!
