Welcome back to my confessions series. I have been having so much fun writing this series. I hope that you are having a good time reading it.
Today I want to talk to you about something that I never thought I would describe myself as…
Confessions of an Anti-Social Homeschooling Mom
First of all, I never ever dreamed I would be a homeschool mom. Really, never. Now I am adding another adjective to my title, anti-social.
Growing up I loved being involved in many social activities. I was a cheerleader, in the flag corp, band, art classes, and many other social groups. After graduation I went to work as an office manager who talked on the phone almost all day long. After work I was out with friends. Fast-forward 13 years and here I am. A mother of two awesome kids, which I homeschool, and am finding more and more that I do not enjoy being out and about or around a lot of people.
If you were to call me on any given day you may find that your call will likely go to voice mail or I will text you back that I am swamped. Why? Mostly because I don’t like talking on the phone, in general, and I likely am swamped. LOL Working from home means that I spend a ton of time working. I spend a lot of time conversing with clients via email and text messages. I try to keep myself off of the phone, though, because I end up fumbling all over my words, feeling insecure and very awkward. When I am able to type things out beit on the phone as a text message or an email on the computer I am able to really read through what I am saying and make sure I don’t sound foolish.
Outings… sigh, I am not a fan of group outings and will likely make excuses as to why I cannot go. I didn’t used to be that way. I used to thoroughly enjoy being out with groups of people. Now that I am older and not around people, in groups, on a daily basis it makes it so hard for me to feel comfortable doing so. I do not typically miss big family functions but I do get very anxious before them.
You will not likely find me at a co-op or at sporting events either. It is far too much socialization for me.
The truth is, when I have “me time” I don’t schedule outings and events with friends. I would much rather curl up in my bed and binge watch something on Netflix or read a good book.
Wanna know something else? I am not alone in wanting to be left alone! The more people I meet (the irony isn’t lost on me, people!) the more I realize that the way I feel is totally normal. It isn’t unhealthy or abnormal. I know that I don’t feel like the same person I was years ago and that is okay. I am becoming a different version of myself, as I grow!
Who doesn’t want to grow? I do!
